8th Grade Math Chapter 1 Test Preview

For the first 8th Grade Math test, you need to be able to...

• 1.1: Convert fractions to decimals, convert decimals to fractions.
• 1.2: Multiply fractions.
• 1.3: Divide fractions.
• 1.4: Add and subtract fractions.
• 1.5: Solve one-step equations involving fractions (3/4 + x = 1/2; 2/5*y = 1/4).
• 1.6: Solve two-step equations involving fractions (2/5*w + 1/2 = 3/2).

The test will give more problems focused solving equations.

You will complete this test without using a calculator.

Algebra 2: Chapter 1 Test Review

For the first Algebra 2 test, you need to be able to...

• Sec. 1.1: Use < and > to compare numbers.
• Sec. 1.2: Name the squares, cubes, & powers of from 1 through 10 without a calculator.
• Sec. 1.2: Use the order of operations to calculate answers.
• Sec. 1.3: Simplify algebraic expressions (distribute, combine like terms).
• Sec. 1.4: Solve equations (get x by itself!).
• Sec. 1.5: Rewrite formulas (turn d = rt into t = d/r).
• Sec. 1.6: Turn story problems into algebraic equations and solve.

The test will give more problems focused on simplifying expressions, solving equations, and rewriting formulas. The test will include one story problem.

You will complete this test without using a calculator.

• Elle fait un sandwich? —Non, elle ne fait pas un sandwich.
• Vous voulez les devoirs? —Non, nous ne voulons pas les devoirs. 
• Tu vas au parc? —Non, je ne vais pas au parc.

• Students then ask each other the question, "Tu es quoi?" and respond with "Je suis..." plus one of these adjectives.
• Watch for liaison opportunities! Say the ending -s on suis when the next word starts with a vowel.

1. Six sentences should use a form of avoir for the verb ("I have...," "She has...").
2. Six sentences should use a form of être for the verb ("You are...?" "He is...").
3. Each sentence should include a noun from Vocab List 1B (the one we just quizzed on, pp. 16-17). 

[10 minutes] Reading and Listening Practice

1. Students trio up, read their homework sentences to each other in round (Student A reads her Sentence #1 in French to Student B; Student B translates that sentence out loud; then B reads his Sentence #1 to C, C translates; then C reads her #1 to A, A translates; and so on...!
2. Teacher checks homework for completion (12 sentences on paper) during this time.

• Read and repeat personality and nationality adjectives.
• Say each adjective twice, once masculine while pointing at guy, once feminine while pointing at gal (don't sweat explaining in English; keep it in French, simple and physical!)
• Teacher demos: "Je suis... [adjective]." Then teacher asks student, "Tu es...?" Get students to respond in kind with "Je suis... [adjective]."

1. One correctly conjugated present-tense form of one of the spelling-change verbs listed on pp. 16-17, and
2. one of the vocab words from List 1.2 on page 6!
3. Use a different verb and a different verb in each sentence (you may not write 14 sentences in which you rejettes une déclaration d'amour (et pourquoi?!).

• Each student writes one sentence showing one spelling-change verb in action on scratch-paper poster (use marker, write big so all can see; make accent marks big!).

[25 minutes] Avoir and Faire Idioms! pp. 20-21

• Students pair up: working sequentially through the list of avoir and faire idioms, one student gives pronoun/subject, other student gives sentence saying that that pronoun/subject has/does the action/idiom given.
• CAH goes around, answers questions.
