  • First, read through the entire article again and underline all words and phrases that you don't immediately know.
  • Then translate the text into English from the beginning to the end of the fourth paragraph (ending with "...notamment au Maghreb, au Moyen-Orient et en Afrique."
[10 minutes] Oral Reading and Translation Practice!
  • Students trio up: one reads one sentence from article, partners read their translations thereof, check for differences.
  • CAH checks homework for completion at this time.
[15 minutes] Translation Review
  • Compare student translations, highlight trouble words and constructions.

  • Students complete pp. 22, Exs. 1 & 2
  • Read answers aloud!
[46 minutes] Les nouvelles!
  • Read Le Monde article aloud.
  • While reading, students mark words/phrases they don't know.
  • Begin translation/etymology/grammar review through first portion of text.

  • Écoutez et répétez: all adjectives on pp. 26-27 (note most are cognates).
  • Emphasize masculine/feminine pronunciation differences.
  • Students then ask each other the question, "Tu es quoi?" and respond with "Je suis..." plus one of these adjectives.
  • Watch for liaison opportunities! Say the ending -s on suis when the next word starts with a vowel.

DUE: Les Devoirs! Théâtre des idiomes de faire et d'avoir (pp. 20-21)
  • Revoyez les idiomes faire et avoir (pp. 20-21... et c’est revoir, oui? Savez-vous toutes ces expressions?)
  • Avec zéro, un, ou deux partenaires, préparez un sketch (théâtre!) dans lequel vous utilisez dix idiomes différents.
  • Chaque personne doit parle cinq phrases au minimum.
  • Présentez en direct lundi!

  • Après chaque présentation, les présenteurs posent deux questions du sketch aux élèves qui écoutent (mini-interro!).

DUE: Les Devoirs: Write 14 sentences using...
  1. One correctly conjugated present-tense form of one of the spelling-change verbs listed on pp. 16-17, and
  2. one of the vocab words from List 1.2 on page 6!
  3. Use a different verb and a different verb in each sentence (you may not write 14 sentences in which you rejettes une déclaration d'amour (et pourquoi?!).
[20 minutes] Practice Spelling-Change Verbs! pp. 16-17
  • Each student writes one sentence showing one spelling-change verb in action on scratch-paper poster (use marker, write big so all can see; make accent marks big!).
  • CAH checks homework during this time.
[25 minutes] Avoir and Faire Idioms! pp. 20-21
  • Students pair up: working sequentially through the list of avoir and faire idioms, one student gives pronoun/subject, other student gives sentence saying that that pronoun/subject has/does the action/idiom given.
  • CAH goes around, answers questions.
[11 minutes] Vocab 1.2 (p. 6) Firing Line Practice!

  • Students pair up, ask each other the questions on p. 7, Ex. 3.
  • After five minutes practice, students then tell the class the answers to the questions relevant to their conversation partners.
[20 minutes] Spelling-Change Verbs!
  1. voyager, déménager, déranger, manger, partager, plonger, ranger 
  2. commencer, avancer, effacer, forcer, lancer, menacer, placer, remplacer 
  3. envoyer, balayer, ennuyer, essayer, nettoyer, payer 
  4. acheter, amener, élever, emmener, lever, mener, peser 
  5. préférer, considérer, espérer, posséder, répéter 
  6. appeler, épeler, rappeler, renouveler 
  7. jeter, projeter, rejeter
Remember: it's the 1, 2, 3, and 6 of the verb conjugation that make trouble! The boot verbs!
  • practice conjugations in notebooks

  • Students ask each other the questions in Exercise 3 (p. 7) and offer responses.
  • Students circulate to at least three partners to ask and answer these questions.
  • When finished, CAH asks students these questions.\

DUE: First Skit!
  • Prepare skit about a relationship (romantic, platonic, family, whatever) that incorporates at least seven of the vocab words in this list.
  • Every time you say one of the vocab words, you must hold up a small poster displaying the word (in font large enough for everyone in room to read!).
  • You may work solo, in pairs, in trios, or in quartets.
  • Each skit participant must say at least five sentences.
  • I will tolerate scripts but encourage work from memory.
  • Practice time available in first half of Wednesday's class.
  • Everyone presents in second half of Wednesday's class!

  • Read and repeat vocabulary on p. 4
  • Use new words in conversation.
  • If time allows, do p. 5, Exs. 1 & 2 together out loud.

Pour chaque verbe, écrivez les six formes du présent, les six formes du passé composé, et les six formes de l’imparfait. Par exemple:

Write all homework by hand, not typing. Handwriting will help you better memorize your French!

[5 minutes] Pair and compare!
  • Students check each other's work, especially on the four main irregular verbs
  • CAH checks homework during this time
 [20 minutes] Review verb conjugations present, past, and imperfect!
  • Each student puts one verb conjugation (all three tenses) on board.
  • Save space: put just one form of passé composé with helping verb up.
  • Highlight oddities.
  • Review difference between passé composé and imparfait.
 [10 minutes] New Vocab! p. 4 of D'accord! Écoutez et répétez.

[10 minutes] CAH presentation! CAH tells about his summer; students take notes, each gives one fact from what CAH said after he finishes.

[25 minutes] More Conversations: Reawakening the French Brain! Students will respond to the following questions:
  1. Qu'est-ce que tu aimes étudier? Pourquoi?
  2. Qu'est-ce que tu aimes faire le week-end?
  3. Qu'est-ce que tu aimes faire en [un mois]?
  4. Qu'est-ce qu'il faut faire pour organiser une soirée/une fête/une boum/une teuf?
  5. Qu'est-ce que tu as fait hier soir?
  6. Qu'est-ce que tu as fait ce matin?
  7. Parle-moi de ton film préféré.
  8. Parle-moi de ton livre préféré.
  9. Parle-moi de ton émission télé préférée.
  10. Parle-moi de ta musique préférée.
